Does Tulum have a Seaweed Problem?

Updated: Feb 8

Here in Tulum, we are blessed with some of the most beautiful and secluded beaches in the world. While seaweed can sometimes be an issue for tourists, we are wanted to demystify what can be expected during your stay with us at Zorba or Mahayana.

The truth is that the seaweed along the beaches comes and goes. Any seaweed that washes up along the beach in Tulum is cleaned daily by local businesses and boutique hotels. The municipality requires businesses to collect any seaweed that gathers ashore.

At Zorba and Mahayana we rake the beach and the full grounds every day regardless of the conditions so it always looks its best. We even sift beach sand as needed to keep it soft and pristine and free of debris! The last few months have been easy with pristine water, clear beaches, and little evidence of seaweed at all.

While it is impossible to predict the future, when you visit Zorba or Mahayana, you will see our dedicated grounds team rakes the full beach and property every morning to ensure the beaches are as beautiful as can be.
